so many feels on how rural punk communities are digital AND analog based at the same time.
I have always lived in urban areas but man if I don’t love visiting rural punk communities on tour for this very reason. Also some of the coolest people I’ve ever met have come out of that sort of community.
Where I grew up(and even into adulthood), going to a show meant carpooling a good 2+ hour trip and into another state most of the time. The internet was a means of communication and promotion , yet word of mouth and handmade flyers are a huge part too. I also wanted to bring up the way we consume media in large quantities and how it makes subcultural variations seem less rigid.
Yes, this! Cinncinnati, Columbus, Pittsburgh. Though we did have a decent local scene, there was still nothing in my town. And my growin’ up years were before the internet so it was all flyers and word of mouth.
Currently writing something to try and get across to immigration just how meaningful that relationship is, actually.
I have found this resource extremely informative and helpful in deciding to come off medication. I don’t know a lot about the Icarus Project and I’m a little skeptical of the group as a whole but this guide is definitely worth a read for anyone thinking about coming off meds. It’s got a lot of information on what to expect as well as tips on how to take care of yourself during the process. All things I wish I would have known going into the process the first time around and all things not shared with me from medical professionals. Sharing here also because this is a fantastic resource.
That’s what psychiatrist Allen Frances, chair of the DSM-IV task force, has to say about DSM-5.
Nick Cooney is a rapist.
Who is suing his victim and people who stand with her.
Nick Cooney is an awful human being, and people who use the excuse of “he’s done so much for the animals!*” are also horrible human beings. Please do no buy his book, and tell people why you won’t. Please do not attend events he will be at a speaking at or helping organize, and tell people why.
My thoughts are with her as she stands up to him tomorrow.
*So has she, not that it matters.
Their blood will be on your hands, Mayor Emmanuel. DNAinfo.com mapped the gang boundaries CPS students
could will be forced to cross if when their schools close.
"It all starts with the person who seems committed to win the current spirited competition as the most loathsome person in American political life: Mayor Rahm Emanuel. The same Mayor overseeing the closing of fifty-four schools and six community mental health clinics under the justification of a “budgetary crisis” has announced that the city will be handing over more than $100 million to DePaul University for a new basketball arena. This is part of a mammoth redevelopment project on South Lakeshore Drive consisting of a convention center anchored by an arena for a non-descript basketball team that has gone 47-111 over the last five years. It’s also miles away from DePaul’s campus. These aren’t the actions of a mayor. They’re the actions of a mad king."

“…the great scam known as the city’s TIF program. At its essence—if I give it the best possible spin—the TIF program lets the mayor take property tax dollars from the schools, parks, and county in order to invest the money in projects that he hopes will someday generate even more property tax dollars. Think of it like pulling ten bucks out of your paycheck and investing it in Starbucks stock. In several years, if all goes well, your $10 may have grown into $100. Incidentally, if you do this several thousand times over, you might get wealthy enough to become one of the few people the mayor makes time to meet with—unlike, for example, everyone else who lives in Chicago. In the case at hand, Mayor Emanuel has decided to take the $55 million and buy some property on which he’ll build the aforementioned hotel and basketball arena. But once the city owns it, this land will move off the property tax rolls because publicly held property is exempt. So instead of investing your property tax dollars in developments that create more property tax dollars, Mayor Emanuel has decided to invest them in a scheme that will yield no property tax dollars whatsoever. Think of it as spending $55 million to lose money. Just so you know, the land in question, near the intersection of Cermak and Prairie, is not blighted property that no one wants. Which, by law, is what TIF funds are supposed to be invested in.” If you don’t understand why myself and some of your Chicago tumblr friends are foaming at the mouth today, this is why. Please read this article by the one of four people still employed as a journalist that is paying attention to the scam the mayor is running.
