Cathy Brennan, radical “feminist” terrorist, has set her sights on a young black activist in Baltimore County, MD. Phylicia Sampson is being taken to court by Brennan, a notorious harasser of trans women and their supporters. Sampson is a recent college grad with few resources, no car and no way to fight back without your help.

As a community, we’ve suffered Brennan’s assaults for a long time—her blog is the best known for outing trans women’s personal information. She believes trans women are men who are infiltrating the feminist community and expends her resources fighting them. The idea that she is now taking her harassment to a legal venue is horrifying. That she has selected a young black woman with few resources to fight back is repugnant.

We can’t let Cathy Brennan get away with this! Share Phylicia’s campaign on Facebook, twitter, tumblr and instagram. Here are some things you can do TODAY to help:

Slo ‘Mo: Slow jams for homos (and their fans) is Chicago’s party for lovers hosted by Kristen Kaza with grooves by Tess, including: Anita Baker, Sade, Frank Ocean, SWV, D’Angelo, Janet Jackson, A Tribe Called Quest, Raphael Saadiq, Zhane, R. Kelly, Isley Brothers, Jade, Brandy, Teena Marie, Maxwell, Mary J Blige + more. Slo ‘Mo’s residency at Logan Square’s The Whistler takes place the third Thursday of every month, and Satellite Slo ‘Mos are hosted sporadically around the city, including at the Shrine nightclub.

Okay, I need to say something about this. Lovers is a band that is playing the notoriously transphobic Michfest. I’ve posted repeatedly about Michfest’s transphobic “womyn-born womyn” policy. I’ve posted Red Durkin’s petition to boycott Michfest on several occasions. I wrote a piece about it for The Qu and The L Stop. I’m fucking serious here. Trans women have asked us to stand with them and boycott Michfest until it is safe for ALL women to attend. That means boycotting any performer who continues to support Michfest, even if it means interfering with your fun. One more time: WALK THE FUCKING WALK.

Recently queers in Brooklyn dealt with a similar situation when a so-called inclusive and “radical” dance party booked JD Samson for an event. JD, of course, continues to support Michfest. After outcry from the community, JD was pulled from the lineup. I expect the same to happen here. Do not let me down, Chicago queers.

Michigan Womyn's Music Festival: Performances:

This is probably the only time you’ll see me link directly to Michfest’s page. This is a list of the performers. They have all been asked to boycott the festival until it is a safe and welcoming place for ALL women. Thus far, two performers have dropped out. The Indigo Girls have stated that this is the last year they will support the festival. None of the other performers have indicated that they will join the boycott. Before booking any events, check this list to make sure you’re not implicitly supporting Michfest’s transphobic policies.

The reality is that Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival is not safe for any women until it is welcoming for all women.

We are asking you, as a musician, and as a person who believes in the dignity and equality of all women, to stand in solidarity with transgender women and our allies and to not attend or perform at the Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival until Lisa Vogel and the other organizers fully and openly welcome all self-identified women.

Although there is a small, devoted group of individuals working from within to change the transphobic policies put into place and enforced by the organizers, we believe that real change can not happen until all women are welcome to attend the Festival. We are asking you to respect the boycott of the Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival until real, substantive change has taken place.

We believe that the markers of substantive change are three simple things:

1) The organizers must amend the festival policy to explicitly welcome all self-identified women to the annual MWMF.

2) The organizers must recognize the destructive impact that 20+ years of transphobic policies have had on our feminist and queer communities and issue a formal statement acknowledging and apologizing for this injustice.

3) The organizers must program at least one performer who is a transgender woman to perform at the Festival. This will show that transgender women are truly welcome and that they have a legitimate place and voice in the MWMF community.

Until these three demands are met, we call on you to not attend or perform at the Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival. You are implored to respect the call to boycott this event because the organizers have maintained destructive and transphobic policies that are unwelcoming and unsafe for all women in our communities.

This petition calls upon all attendees and performers of the 2013 Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival to boycott the Festival until substantive change is achieved.

I try to live my life assuming good intent on behalf of the people around me. I don’t think Vogel is running Michfest as a WBW space specifically to hurt trans people. But when she starts to say that true solidarity can exist while also attempting to hold “transwomyn” as separate-but-equal as womyn-born-womyn, I can no longer see ground for respectful disagreement. More specifically, Vogel is telling the trans community (and specifically trans women) who we are and what we need. I dont’ get to be an arbiter on racism, and Vogel doesn’t get to be an arbiter when it comes to transphobia. There can still be reasonable disagreements about what those terms mean, but when an entire community says “Hey, this is an act of bigotry,” it seems incredibly presumptuous, offensive, and disrespectful to response, “Nu uh!”

All of which is to say that, as far as I’m concerned, Lisa can take Michfest and go jump in the lake. Good riddance.
